The results of the summit in Vilnius were perceived differently within the expert community. Wojciech Przybylski, the editor-in-chief of Visegrád Insight and the head of the ResPublica Foundation has shared with the Newssky, on whether the result is good for Ukraine, and what Ukraine should do to become a member of the Alliance.

Foremost, the NATO summit was a success overall. And any NATO success is good for Ukraine. Around THE summit, Ukraine has received additional support in arms, including the missiles from France. Furthermore, and most importantly, Sweden’s accession to NATO is one important step closer. With Turkey, playing clearly into Ukraine’s favor and consolidating its position within NATO. This is a very significant confirmation of support for Ukraine again. Removing the membership action plan for Ukraine is another confirmation that Ukraine’s accession into NATO will be in the future fast tracked. Additionally, NATO members have clearly expressed the will to have Ukraine in.

The requirement of democratic reforms is a must. Just like with the accession to the EU, there is a recognition of Ukraine’s progress, especially under war conditions, and at the same time, it must be understood that this is an absolute requirement to have a democratic foundation principled based membership without which NATO could become only an aggressive alliance. The value-driven democratic set up of NATO reaffirms that it will not be an aggressive alliance, and Ukraine must reassure that. Finally, the ongoing stability of interaction between Ukraine and NATO has a major step forward in a slap to Russia.

Thinking about the consequences of the NATO statement, imagine that the western partners know that the best interest to fulfill this application is for Ukraine to win this war. That means support for the armed defense of Ukraine will continue and is likely to increase.
