Everyone in NATO realizes how invaluable the force Ukraine represents today on the battlefield and in defending rule-based order in Europe.

Regarding the expected NATO summit regarding Ukraine and Georgia. One of Lithuania’s goals for the July 2023 NATO summit in Vilnius is to invite Ukraine to become member of the Alliance. Back in 2008, at the summit in Bucharest, NATO countries recorded the prospect of membership of Ukraine and Georgia. What do you think are the real prospects for both countries? Wojciech Przybylski, the editor-in-chief of Visegrád Insight and the head of the ResPublica foundation in Warsaw, answered questions of NewSky what are the real prospects for both countries.

Both countries should be invited, and Ukraine is in good prospect. NATO remembers how it failed to take this step in 2008 over the summit in Bucharest, when it feared to provoke Russia. Currently, Hungary is the only country that seems to be at least hesitant if not hostile to the idea. But at the end of the day, it is never the last one to veto any EU or NATO decision. At the same time, everyone in NATO understands how invaluable the force Ukraine represents today on the battlefield and in defending rule-based order in Europe. This is a powerful incentive for further bold steps and not repeating past mistakes.
