Juraj Marušiak: The fall of power was predictable

On Christmas Eve, the resignation of the Slovak government headed by Eduard Heger presented the country with several challenges. President Zuzanna Chaputova even spoke about the threat of destruction of democracy in Slovakia. Dr. Juraj Marušiak from the Institute of Political Science of the Slovak Academy of Sciences commented on that for Newssky.

Eduard Heger

The fall of E. Heger’s government was the result of the dissatisfaction of most of the Slovak people with his activities. According to some polls, up to 90 percent of citizens wanted his resignation. The government’s policy, primarily in the socio-economic sphere, its inability to communicate with the public, and the incompetence of some of its members also caused outrage among the former voters of the parties of the current coalition.

On the other hand, the government’s actions cause such public outrage that they discredit many positive aspects of its policies, including supporting Ukraine in its war with the Russian Federation and helping refugees from Ukraine. Part of the current opposition uses this. Of course, if such parties as Smer-SD or «Republika» come to power, concerns about the continuation of Slovakia’s current policy towards Ukraine would be well-founded.
