The Russian invasion of Ukraine contributed to the creation or, on the contrary, to the destruction of certain alliances. Newssky asked Matej Kandrik,  chief executive officer of Bratislava’s Adapt Institute, to share his vision of the state of the Visegrád Group and the likely change in the format of this association.

This war changed the traditional PL — HU and CZ — SK axis to PL, CZ, SK cluster and isolated HU. Yet this might change as our and Polish parliamentary elections are approaching. There is a potential for a national illiberal, national populist government in Slovakia, which might move much closer to current HU positions. In Poland, the situation is different, of course, but as far as I understand, the PiS is getting under pressure from far-right parties, which call for limiting support to Ukraine and use those resources in Poland for the Polish people. Elections might end in a situation PiS would be forced to make a coalition with these parties.
