Zelensky initiated the creation of the Unmanned Systems Forces in the Armed Forces

Zelensky's special decree initiates the creation of the Unmanned Systems Forces as a separate type of force. The President proposes to submit this issue for consideration by the National Security Council, he writes dw.com.

The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyi, has instructed the Cabinet of Ministers to work out the issue of creating unmanned systems forces as a separate type of force within the structure of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU). This is stated in the presidential decree No. 51, "On increasing the capabilities of the defense forces", signed on Tuesday, February 6.

"The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, with the involvement of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, to work out the issue of creating unmanned systems forces as a separate type of force in the structure of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and, based on the results of the work, to submit relevant proposals for consideration by the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine," the decree reads.

The creation of the Unmanned Systems Forces is aimed at increasing the capabilities of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the use of unmanned and robotic air, sea and ground systems, ensuring readiness for the use of such systems as intended.

Zelensky has high hopes for drones

Subsequently, in his traditional evening address, Zelenskyi explained that the creation of the Unmanned Systems Forces is "not a question of the future - it is something that should give a very concrete result in the near future."

"This year should become decisive in many aspects. And, obviously, on the battlefield. Drones — unmanned systems — have proven effective in combat on land, in the sky, and at sea. Ukraine has really changed the security situation in the Black Sea thanks to drones. Repelling assaults on the ground is largely the work of drones. Large-scale destruction of the occupiers and their equipment is also drones," Zelenskyi said.

"Now the list of tasks is clear: special full-time positions for working with drones, special units, effective training, systematization of experience, constant scaling of production and attracting the best ideas, the best specialists in this field. This is a task for the army, the Ministry of Defense and the government in general," the president emphasized in his address.

Earlier, Defense Minister Rustem Umyerov called the production and procurement of drones a priority of the Ministry of Defense for 2024, and President Zelenskyy during his press conference on December 19 said that Ukraine will manufacture 1 million drones next year.
