Zaporizhzhia under fire: Thousands without electricity and heat after double strike by Russia
12.03.2026Zaporizhzhia, a city that has become a symbol of invincibility in the midst of a great war, is once again experiencing trials. The sky above it was torn apart by an enemy strike for the second time in a day, leaving thousands of civilians without vital goods - light and warmth. This act of terror, aimed at plunging the city into cold and darkness, is yet another testament to the cynicism of the aggressor, who strikes at critical infrastructure, trying to break the spirit of Ukrainians. But Zaporizhzhia stands, and each blow only hardens its resistance.

Chronicle of the evening strike: Winter is on the doorstep, and the lights are out
Evening was approaching when the city of Zaporizhzhia shuddered from another Russian shelling. This was the second strike in a day on the peaceful city, which had become a familiar target for the aggressor. According to preliminary information provided by local authorities, the attack fell on critical infrastructure facilities that ensure the city's life support. The consequences were not long in coming: thousands of Zaporizhzhia residents were instantly left without electricity, and in some areas even heating was lost. The air temperature is rapidly dropping, as Ukraine is already feeling the breath of winter, and the lack of heat is becoming not just discomfort, but a threat to health and life, especially for the youngest residents and the elderly. This blow not only caused physical destruction, but also deeply affected the psychological state of the community, which lives every day under the threat of shelling1.
Emergency services were working quickly on the ground. Despite the potential danger of repeated attacks, power engineers and rescuers immediately began work to eliminate the consequences and restore damaged networks. Local authorities promptly informed the population about the scale of the destruction and the action plan, urging them to remain calm and use the “points of invincibility”, which had already proven their effectiveness during previous massive attacks on the country’s energy system. Light camouflage became another unwritten rule for residents, because every visible point of light could become a landmark for the enemy.
Zaporizhia is a target on the front lines of the energy war
Zaporizhzhia, located near the front line, is a key strategic center and is constantly under attack. Since the full-scale invasion, the city has suffered hundreds of missile and drone attacks, systematically destroying its infrastructure and peaceful life. This double blow to energy facilities is not an accident, but part of a deliberate strategy by the Kremlin. Russia seeks to destabilize the situation in Ukraine, cause a humanitarian catastrophe in the winter, break the will of the people to resist, and sow panic and distrust in the authorities. Over the past two years, Ukraine has suffered unprecedented attacks on the energy system, which led to large-scale blackouts during the winter period. Energy workers are heroically restoring the damaged, demonstrating miracles of resilience and professionalism, often under fire and in dangerous conditions2.
The situation with the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP), which is located nearby and occupied by Russian troops, requires special attention. Although the ZNPP was not directly targeted by this particular strike, the plant’s proximity to the war zone and the systematic attacks on the region create constant risks of nuclear and environmental catastrophe. The international community has repeatedly called for the demilitarization of the area around the ZNPP, but these calls are ignored by the aggressor. Thus, attacks on Zaporizhzhia have not only local but also global consequences, as any destabilization in the region can lead to unpredictable consequences.
Humanitarian Challenges: Survival in the absence of light and heat
The lack of electricity and heat is not just an inconvenience, it is a series of interconnected humanitarian problems. Without electricity, water pumps stop working, sewage systems stop working, mobile communications and the Internet are turned off. This makes it impossible to obtain information, seek help, and disrupts the work of hospitals, pharmacies and shops. In cold weather, the lack of heating can quickly lead to hypothermia, especially in homes where the elderly, children and people with special needs live. The threat of frostbite becomes real, and the number of calls for medical assistance is increasing. World human rights organizations and the UN have repeatedly stressed that such attacks on civilian infrastructure that has no military significance can be qualified as war crimes3.
To address these challenges, Zaporizhia, like other Ukrainian cities, is developing a network of “points of invincibility” – places where people can warm up, charge their phones, and get hot food and water. Volunteer organizations and international partners are actively helping to equip these points, as well as providing humanitarian aid in the form of warm clothes, heaters, and fuel. But even with all these efforts, life in conditions of constant outages and the threat of new strikes is extremely stressful and exhausting, which has long-term psychological consequences for residents. Children who grow up in such conditions experience trauma that can affect their development and future.
International reaction and search for responsibility
Each new attack on Ukraine's civilian infrastructure sparks a wave of condemnation from the international community, although often not decisive enough to stop the aggressor. Representatives of the UN, the European Union, the US and other democratic countries regularly declare the inadmissibility of such actions, emphasizing their inconsistency with international humanitarian law. These attacks are a gross violation of the Geneva Conventions, which prohibit attacks on objects essential to the survival of the civilian population4. The International Criminal Court has already begun investigating possible war crimes committed in Ukraine, and gathering evidence on each such incident is critical for future trials. Ukrainian prosecutors and law enforcement agencies are meticulously documenting every destruction, every human pain, so that the aggressor bears full responsibility.
However, despite all the statements and investigations, the effectiveness of international influence on Russia remains limited. This emphasizes the need to strengthen sanctions, provide Ukraine with modern air defense systems, and actively engage in diplomatic work to isolate the aggressor. Every day that Russian missiles and drones reach Ukrainian cities is a challenge to the international security system and a test of the strength of democratic values. The lack of a decisive response sets a precedent for other authoritarian regimes, encouraging them to take similar aggressive actions. The world cannot stand aside when a terrorist state deliberately destroys the livelihoods of millions of people.
The steadfastness of Zaporizhia: Restoration and an indomitable spirit
Despite constant threats and destruction, Zaporizhia demonstrates incredible resilience. Public utilities work around the clock, often risking their own lives to restore the supply of electricity, heat and water as quickly as possible. Energy workers, water utilities, gas services, rescuers of the State Emergency Service - these people are real heroes of the rear, holding the front of life support. Their coordinated work and professionalism allow to minimize the consequences of attacks and ensure a quick return to normal functioning of the city, as much as possible in war conditions. Last year alone, according to the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine, more than a thousand damages to the energy infrastructure were eliminated, which indicates the scale of the challenges and the speed of response5.
The local population also shows amazing self-organization and mutual assistance. Social networks and messengers become platforms for sharing information about available “points of invincibility”, places where you can charge gadgets, as well as for coordinating volunteer initiatives. Neighbors help each other, share food, water, heaters. This collective spirit of invincibility is the strongest response to enemy terror. Russian strikes, instead of breaking Ukrainians, only strengthen their unity and determination to resist, fighting for their freedom and dignity. Every restored lantern, every warm battery is a small but very important victory over the darkness and despair that the aggressor is trying to impose. This is not just a repair, it is an act of defiance and faith in the future.
The Future Under Siege: Long-Term Challenges and the Path to Victory
The future of Zaporizhzhia, like that of all of Ukraine, remains under siege as long as a full-scale war continues. However, every strike on the city and its residents, despite all the pain and destruction, reinforces the understanding that there can be no compromises with the aggressor. The need to strengthen Ukraine's air defense is absolutely critical, since these systems are the first and most important shield for cities. Assistance from international partners in providing modern air defense systems, such as NASAMS, IRIS-T, Patriot, allows us to save thousands of lives and secure critical infrastructure6However, these systems are still not enough to completely close the skies over the entire country.
Long-term challenges include not only restoring physical destruction, which will require colossal financial investments and the involvement of international donors, but also overcoming the psychological trauma caused by the war. Ukrainian society is already aware that victory will not only be military, but also mental - a victory over fear, despair and attempts to destroy national identity. Zaporizhzhia, as one of the outposts of Ukraine, will continue to stand and fight. Its history of resilience will become an example for future generations, evidence that even in the darkest times the light of the human spirit does not go out. Every Ukrainian, every Zaporizhzhia, with their daily actions, indomitability, faith, brings closer the day when there will again be a peaceful sky over the city, and light and warmth will not be a luxury, but an unconditional right.
