The resolution was adopted by 442 votes in favor, 98 against, and 126 abstentions.
“MEPs welcomed the proposal for a 30-day ceasefire reached on March 11. They expect Russia to agree to it and follow it by ceasing all attacks on Ukrainian civilians, infrastructure and territory,” the European Parliament website says.
To uphold Ukraine's right to self-defense, the EU and its member states must significantly increase the necessary assistance to the country, the resolution states.
To prevent further Russian attacks, the European Parliament called for reliable security guarantees for Ukraine. MEPs opposed any attempts to pressure Kyiv to impose a “peace deal” on the Kremlin’s terms. They also stressed that the EU should play a key role in negotiations on security in Europe.
MEPs welcome the launch of a “coalition of the willing” to potentially ensure the implementation of a final European-led peace agreement.
The European Parliament is pushing for the confiscation of frozen Russian assets to finance the reconstruction of Ukraine. The resolution also calls for tougher sanctions against Russia and companies that help Moscow circumvent restrictions and supply technology for its military complex.
European Parliament resolutions do not have legal force and are largely symbolic in nature - they express the political position of MEPs.
On March 11, a meeting of delegations from Ukraine and the United States took place in Saudi Arabia.
During the talks, Ukraine agreed to the US proposal to implement a 30-day ceasefire in the war with Russia. The delegations also discussed the importance of humanitarian efforts as part of the peace process, particularly during the ceasefire, including the exchange of prisoners of war, the release of detained civilians, and the return of forcibly displaced Ukrainian children.
US President Donald Trump said that US and Russian representatives would meet later to discuss a ceasefire.
