On May 3, the European Commission presented a plan to increase the production of ammunition to 1 million per year, for which 500 million euros have already been allocated from the budget of the European Union. This was reported by Euractiv with reference to the European Commissioner for the Internal Market and Defense Industry, Thierry Breton, writes liga.net.

According to Breton, this plan is "unprecedented" and aimed at increasing European defense capabilities.

He says that the European defense industry should switch to a military economy mode in order to meet the security needs of Ukraine and EU countries.

"Today, European industry is not large enough to meet the security needs of Ukraine and our member countries. But she has the potential to do that,” Breton said.

He is convinced that within 12 months, Europe will be able to increase the production of ammunition to 1 million.

On May 3, the European Commission allocated EUR 500 million from the EU budget for this. It is planned that the bloc's member countries will also provide a similar amount.

"In order to support Ukraine in the very short term, we must continue to supply it from our reserves. But we also need to change the priorities of the current production and send it to Ukraine as a priority," Breton said.

  • On March 8, 2023, the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, offered the countries of the European Union to spend 1 billion euros on joint purchases of ammunition for Ukraine and replenishing their own stocks.
  • On March 20, the EU agreed on a €2 billion purchase plan for ammunition for Ukraine.
