The European Union plans to introduce a new package of sanctions against Russia by the third anniversary of the beginning of the Russian Federation's war against Ukraine in February 2025. Preparatory work on it has already begun, the weekly Welt am Sonntag reported on Sunday, December 22, citing diplomatic sources in Brussels.
This package of sanctions will be the 16th. As EU diplomats noted, the measures are aimed at "sending a clear signal to Moscow." The package includes punitive measures against specific sectors of the Russian economy, "which have not yet been touched or not touched enough."
In addition, the new package will include additional sanctions against individuals and organizations that are considered "propagandists of the Russian regime" and are responsible for undermining the territorial integrity of Ukraine.
Sanctions for espionage and disinformation
The European Commission and the European External Action Service also plan to impose entry bans and asset freezes on individuals involved in espionage for Russia and disinformation campaigns, including those directed against Germany.
At the same time, Brussels recognizes the difficulty of tracking the involvement of such persons in "hybrid attacks" by Russia and collecting relevant evidence. In this regard, it has not yet been decided whether sanctions for espionage and disinformation will be approved on February 24, Welt am Sonntag notes.
