“Downing Street and Elysee Palace spokespeople did not deny that Sir Kiir and Mr Macron discussed the possibility during a meeting at Chequers last week,” the publication writes.

The deployment of Western soldiers could help support a post-war settlement between Kiev and Moscow. The French president supports the idea and has already spoken about it with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk. Officials in London and Paris are keeping the details of the talks secret.

“There are issues about what we can support, what we would like to support, and the broader question of the threat that these troops may be under and whether this is an escalation,” The Telegraph quoted a senior Whitehall source as saying.
