At the Verkhovna Rada, an office is being opened to adapt the legislation of Ukraine to the standards of the European Union. This was reported by the Speaker of the Ukrainian Parliament, Ruslan Stefanchuk, at the first joint meeting of the heads of the committees of the Verkhovna Rada and the European Parliament on Wednesday, April 12. He signed the order on the opening of the office in front of the camera, since the meeting of deputies in Brussels and Kyiv took place via video link.
For her part, the speaker of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, expressed hope that negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU will begin in 2023. The first joint meeting of heads of parliamentary committees is an important new step on the path of cooperation between the European Union and Ukraine, she emphasized.
"Today's meeting marks the beginning of in-depth, comprehensive and specific industry cooperation between our institutions. This cooperation is crucial for Ukraine's European path, Metsola said. "There is no doubt that the future of Ukraine lies in the European Union."
The European Parliament and the Council are deepening their partnership
The deputies of the European Parliament expressed their readiness to deepen institutional ties and offered their Ukrainian colleagues their experience, including in the areas of compliance with EU laws and post-war reconstruction. From the point of view of MEPs, it will be important to "build better than it was" and connect the recovery of Ukraine with the reform process that will ensure its European integration.
Most of the meeting took place behind closed doors: the Ukrainian side decided not to broadcast the meeting with the MEPs, citing security measures.
Ukraine received the status of a candidate for joining the European Union in May 2022 and must implement a number of reforms and reforms in key areas in order to meet EU standards. In October, the European Commission will conduct an analysis of these actions and, in the case of a positive assessment, will give the go-ahead for negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the European Union. Kyiv has expressed hope many times that this will happen by the end of 2023.
