Ukrainian developers have created a stopRU browser extension that filters Russian content in recommendations and YouTube search. According to ITC, for Russian stopRU videos, by default, a drop-down menu opens and the item "Not interested" is selected, writes ain.ua.

The stopRU extension fires every time a user visits YouTube. It analyzes the name of each video, description and channels and checks them for the presence of exclusively Russian (ё, ъ, ы, е) and Ukrainian (г, е, и, и) letters. If Russian letters are present, but there are no Ukrainian letters, such a video is considered Russian.

Depending on the page the user is on, the stopRU extension works as follows:

  • On the main page for Russian videos, by default, a drop-down menu opens and the item "Not interested" is selected. In the settings, you can also choose other actions for such videos, for example, choose the item "Do not recommend a channel" or simply highlight the video without any action.
  • On the search results page, Russian videos are dimmed. In the settings, you can change the behavior of the extension.
  • On the "Popular" page, Russian videos are dimmed. You can also change the behavior of the extension in the settings.
  • The video viewing page analyzes the recommended videos on the right side of the screen. For Russian videos, a drop-down menu opens and "Not interested" is selected. Options are also available to highlight the video without any action or to select the "Do not recommend channel" item in the menu. You can change the behavior of the extension in the settings.
