German Chancellor Olaf Scholz
The terminal for receiving liquefied natural gas (LNG) in the port of Wilhelmshaven on Wednesday, December 21, injected the first batch of fuel for enterprises and households into the gas transportation network of Germany. According to Uniper, the operating company, this was done a day ahead of schedule.
The terminal was officially commissioned on December 17. On this day, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, as well as German Economy Minister Robert Habeck and German Finance Minister Christian Lindner visited Wilhelmshaven. At the commissioning ceremony of the LNG terminal, Scholz emphasized that his purpose is to make the energy supply in Germany "independent of pipelines from Russia."
On December 15, the regasification ship Höegh Esperanza docked in Wilhelmshaven. It delivered 165 cubic meters of liquefied gas to Germany from Spain. It is this fuel that has now begun to enter the gas transportation network of the Federal Republic of Germany. According to Uniper, this amount of gas is enough to supply 50 to 80 households within a year.
It is expected that the first LNG tankers will begin docking at Höegh Esperanza and pumping liquefied gas into its tanks from mid-January. It is not planned to receive LNG supplies from Russia "yet", the gas will be imported from the USA, the countries of North and West Africa, as well as from the Middle East, a representative of the companies Uniper, RWE and VNG told Business Insider on December 12.
