Ukrainian “Predator” turret: how UGV Robotics’ latest weapon is changing the rules of war against Russian drones and aircraft
12.11.2025 0 By Chilli.PepperThe Ukrainian war is a field for technological breakthroughs, where domestic developments save thousands of lives and determine the future of defense. The Predator turret, created by the Ukrainian manufacturer UGV Robotics for naval drones, has already proven its effectiveness in destroying Russian helicopters and fighters over the Black Sea. Today, the system is preparing for a new phase of the war — hunting for FPV drones, which have become a real scourge of the front. How does this weapon work, what are its combat feats, and why is the Predator already aimed not only at victory in Ukraine, but also at the global arms market?

History of creation and first combat applications
The technological revolution started with a request from the Ukrainian Defense Ministry's Defense Directorate, when, after a series of naval strikes on ships of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, there was a need to protect the drones themselves from enemy aircraft. 1UGV Robotics proposed installing an automated Predator turret on the famous Magura naval drones: this made it possible to track and destroy helicopters and fighters patrolling the coast and covering the Russian fleet. 1.
The first high-profile success was in December 2024, when the Predator helped shoot down two Russian helicopters near Snake Island. April–May 2025: The system took part in the destruction of a Russian Su-30SM fighter jet over the Black Sea, according to aviation experts and the Ministry of Defense. 2 3For the first time in the world, a naval drone with a turret caused the destruction of a manned combat aircraft.
Technical breakthrough and working principle
Predator is all modern engineering at the service of defense: an automatic combat module with a 7,62 mm machine gun, gyrostabilization, optical and infrared sensors, a laser rangefinder, artificial intelligence algorithms for target detection 1 4The system can be mounted not only on marine platforms, but also on tracked vehicles, pickup trucks, and stationary positions — that is, in universal combat scenarios and for ground attacks.
The main difference is partial autonomy with “transparent” operator control: Predator can independently detect a drone or an air target, but the decision to open fire remains with the human. This minimizes the risk of “friendly fire” and allows it to adapt to different combat scenarios. 1.
The latest models feature a laser for precision, a FPV drone recognition system with protection against interference (radio frequency and even fiber optic signals). The Predator can engage targets as small as 18 cm (7 inches) at ranges of up to 100 meters. 4.
The system in action: naval warfare and front-line testing
After its success at sea, the Predator has found a second “life” — fighting FPV drones. Battles on the front lines today are almost a drone war: Russian FPV drones with explosives massively attack equipment, positions and individual units. Predator is undergoing large-scale testing on ground robots and pickup trucks, and will soon become the standard for fighting on the front lines. According to the manufacturer, the first series of devices will go to the front by the end of the year, and the work plans are to produce up to 100 units per month 4.
The advantage for the army is mobility: Predator can be quickly transported, moved along the front and used in hot spots. High efficiency is confirmed by tests that have shown the successful defeat of both air and ground enemy drones in the “direct targeting” mode. Each turret is manufactured in Ukraine, the cost is less than $100,000 for the military, will be exported more expensive 4.
Interaction with drone systems, prospects for the global arms market
Modern combat is a fusion of robotics, navigation systems and smart weapons. Predator has already appeared at international presentations - in particular, during the NATO Innovation Challenge in France. The system has aroused interest from domestic and Western manufacturers: NATO countries plan to involve Ukrainian experience in their own defense strategy 4.
According to the manufacturer's interview, Predator will be the main link in the future export line of Ukrainian defense technologies. The possibilities range from work as part of naval drones to integration into the protection system of armored vehicles and stationary fortifications. Preparations are also underway to launch a more powerful Apex Predator turret - with a heavier caliber to protect against larger threats 4.
Other Ukrainian developments: “Shablya” and Brave1
The Ukrainian Brave1 cluster and the UGV Robotics enterprise are actively developing automated combat modules: “Shabrya”, “Khyzhak”, “Burya” are both land and sea solutions with high stabilization and a flexible platform. The turrets are mounted on trucks, robots, and dugouts in a matter of hours, and their effectiveness is not only in combating drones, but also in supporting attacks and defense of the entire brigade. 5.
Thanks to the open platform and precise navigation, the product will become the basis for mass production and export expansion to EU and NATO countries, and the experience of front-line operation in Ukraine is recognized as unique in the world.
Financial, production and social aspects - the price of victory for Ukrainian engineering
Ukrainian military-technical startups are restructuring approaches to military production - with maximum automation, minimum bureaucracy, and a quick transition from development to operation. Predator is not only a military victory, but also a reputational breakthrough for the industry: low cost, high flexibility, and minimal adaptation time for combat. Already today, Ukrainian defense enterprises are increasing production volumes comprehensively - up to 1000 turret-carrying robots in half a year 7.
Ukrainian technologies are already replacing dozens of obsolete NATO and Eastern European systems. The country is becoming one of the leaders in the global military robotics market, and the defense industry is becoming an innovation engine for the entire region. 7.
