Ukraine increased steel production

In the first quarter of 2025, Ukrainian metallurgists increased their production of iron and steel, but maintained or even lost positions in the overall global ranking. This is evidenced by data from Worldsteel, writes liga.net with reference to Ukrmetallurgprom.

In January-March 2025, Ukraine produced 1,7 million tons of pig iron, which is 7,16% more than in the same period last year. According to this indicator, the country remained in 14th place among the 40 largest producers.

At the same time, steel production in Ukraine amounted to 1,73 million tons, which is 2,74% more than in the first quarter of 2024. Despite the growth, the country dropped from 21st to 23rd place among 71 producing countries.

China remains the leader in the production of both iron and steel, accounting for more than half of global production.

In particular, in the first quarter of 2025, the PRC smelted 216,28 million tons of pig iron (62,5% of the world volume) and 259,33 million tons of steel (55,3% of the world volume).

In total, 346,34 million tons of pig iron and 468,61 million tons of steel were produced in the world during this period.

Production volumes remained almost unchanged compared to last year. Thus, pig iron volumes increased by 0,04%, while steel volumes fell by 0,36%.
