Ukraine received a $760 million grant from Japan and Norway

Ukraine received 760 million dollars from Japan and Norway on an irrevocable basis. The funds will be directed to partial compensation of state budget expenditures and not only that. About this reported the RBC-Ukraine with reference to the press service of the Ministry of Finance of Ukraine.

Ukraine received:

  • 465 million dollars from Japan;
  • 295 million dollars from Norway.

The funds will be directed to:

  • compensation of expenses of the State Budget of Ukraine, not related to the sphere of security and defense;
    for pension payments;
  • payments to employees of the State Emergency Service (SES);
    salary of teachers.

"Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, the governments of Japan and Norway have repeatedly demonstrated their unwavering support and solidarity for Ukraine. The help of international partners is critically important for financing the social sphere of Ukraine during the war. I am grateful to our partners for their willingness to help and actively cooperate at a crucial time for Ukraine," said Minister of Finance of Ukraine Serhiy Marchenko.

During 2024, Ukraine has already received about $1.2 billion in external financial aid from donors through the World Bank project. Almost 75% of them are grants.

Aid to Ukraine from Japan

According to Masato Kanda, Deputy Minister of Finance of Japan for International Affairs, Tokyo will continue to provide budgetary support to Ukraine in a timely manner.

It is also expected that Japan will transfer equipment to Ukraine to help the energy sector.

On February 16, it became known that the State Budget of Ukraine received part of the grant funds in the amount of 49,4 million dollars from the Japanese government as part of the World Bank project "Renovation of housing for the restoration of people's rights and opportunities" (HOPE).

Aid to Ukraine from Norway

Recently, the Norwegian government decided to allow the direct sale of weapons and defense products from the Norwegian defense industry to the defense authorities of Ukraine. This policy change took effect on January 1, 2024.

In October, Norway announced financial assistance for demining Ukraine. It is about 18,5 million dollars.

Kyiv also recently started negotiations with Oslo on the conclusion of a bilateral security agreement.
