The European Parliament wants to deprive Hungary of its voting rights
05.03.2025MEPs from the Volt party are calling for Hungary to be stripped of its voting rights in the EU due to its blocking of joint decisions. They will submit a corresponding plan to European leaders. This is reported by RBC-Ukraine citing Politico.

Viktor Orban
According to the publication, their plan consists of nine points. In addition to a call to deprive Hungary of its voting rights, the document proposes appointing the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kai Kallas, as a full-fledged EU foreign minister.
The authors of the text also seek to create a common European army and provide for the possibility of revising the EU treaties to include new competences in the field of defense and prepare for enlargement.
Hungary in the European Parliament
Hungary has repeatedly been criticized in the European Parliament for violating the rule of law and democratic standards. The EU accuses Viktor Orbán's government of restricting the independence of the judiciary, media freedom and civil society rights. As a result, Brussels has frozen billions of euros in funding for Budapest, demanding conditions on strengthening democratic institutions.
At the same time, Hungary uses its veto power to block important EU decisions, in particular on aid to Ukraine and sanctions against Russia. This has prompted calls from European parliamentarians to deprive the country of its voting rights in the EU Council. In particular, the Volt party has already initiated a corresponding plan, which envisages sanctions against Budapest for its actions that contradict the interests of the European Union.
