A number of participants in the meeting of foreign ministers of the European Union countries, taking place in Luxembourg on Monday, April 14, reacted positively to the position of the likely future Chancellor of Germany, Friedrich Merz, who does not rule out the prospect of his country supplying long-range Taurus missiles to Ukraine, dpa writes.

Asked about the possibility of transferring these missiles to Ukraine, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaia Kallas said: “Of course, every member state gives what it can give.” “But I think the message is very clear, we have to do more so that Ukraine can defend itself and civilians don’t have to die,” she added.

Dutch Foreign Minister Kaspar Veldkamp also stressed the importance of the Taurus deliveries. “I think it would be a very important signal of where Europe stands in this situation,” he said.

His Polish counterpart, Radosław Sikorski, called Merz's proposal "very good."

Burbock: Ukraine will be provided with 2 million shells

Among other topics being discussed by the heads of foreign ministries of European countries is the initiative to provide Kyiv with additional artillery ammunition.

According to Acting German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, a total of two million large-caliber shells will be provided to Ukraine, a quarter of which will be provided by Germany.

The other day, let us recall, it was announced that in 2025, Germany will transfer to Ukraine four IRIS-T air defense systems and 300 missiles for them, as well as 30 missiles for the Patriot air defense system, 15 Leopard-1 tanks, 25 Marder infantry fighting vehicles, and 100 artillery ammunition.

Russia threatens escalation in case of Taurus transfer to Ukraine

In turn, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, commenting on Merz's position on Taurus for Ukraine, stated that the transfer of these missiles "will lead to escalation," the Russian Interfax news agency writes.

"Judging by Mr. Merz's statements, he is a supporter of strengthening the position and a supporter of various steps that can and will inevitably lead only to further escalation of the situation around Ukraine," he said.

Peskov accused "European capitals" of being "inclined to continue provoking the continuation of the war."
