Moldova will follow Azerbaijan in closing the "Russian House"

Moldova, after Azerbaijan, will become the second country in recent weeks to suspend the activities of the Russian Center for Science and Culture ("Russian House"). The press service of the Moldovan Foreign Ministry reported this on February 13, noting that the decision was made in connection with the violation of the country's airspace by Russian strike drones, writes radiosvoboda.org.

The Foreign Ministry has decided to unilaterally denounce the Moldovan-Russian intergovernmental agreement on the creation and operation of cultural centers, concluded in 1998. "After the completion of the procedure for terminating the agreement, the Russian Cultural Center will cease its activities in our country," says a message published on the Foreign Ministry website.

Earlier, Moldovan President Maia Sandu reported that during the Russian drone attack on Ukraine's Odessa region, two drones flew into Moldovan territory and allegedly exploded there. There were no injuries.

The Moldovan Foreign Ministry urgently summoned the Russian ambassador, Oleg Ozerov. "During the meeting, the Moldovan side expressed a strong protest in connection with these unacceptable violations, emphasizing that such incidents pose a serious threat to national security and citizens of the Republic of Moldova. The Russian diplomat was informed that such actions are a violation of national sovereignty and are another unfriendly gesture." According to the report, the ambassador was shown the wreckage of the drones.

There has been no reaction from Moscow to Moldova's decision yet.

Earlier this month, it became known about the closure of the Russian House in Baku. The Azerbaijani authorities announced legal claims against the representative office of Roscoe. Relations between Baku and Moscow deteriorated after the crash of an Azerbaijan Airlines plane near Aktau in December 2024. Azerbaijan blames Russia for the tragedy, claiming that the plane was shot down by Russian air defense.
