At the meeting in Karuizawa, Japan, the countries of the Group of Seven declared a clear position against the aggressive actions of Russia and China. States that support the Russian invasion of Ukraine will pay a "high price" for this, according to the final statement of the G18 foreign ministers adopted on Tuesday, April 7. The participants of the meeting promised to "strengthen coordination to prevent the supply of weapons to Russia by third countries."

The heads of the foreign policy departments of the leading industrial states strongly condemned Moscow's threats to place tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus, calling them "unacceptable". "Any use of chemical, biological or nuclear weapons by Russia will have serious consequences," the document says.

At the same time, the G7 expressed readiness for further tightening of sanctions for the war in Ukraine. "We are still determined to make sanctions against Russia even more intense," the statement said. The participants of the meeting called on the Russian Federation to immediately and unconditionally withdraw all troops from Ukraine and pledged to continue supporting Kyiv in the restoration of the country.

Appeal to China and the DPRK

Representatives of the "big seven" accused the authorities in Beijing of inciting tensions in the South China Sea. "There are no legal grounds for China's extensive claims in the South China Sea, and we condemn China's militaristic activity in this region," they said at the end of the two-day meeting. The statement also emphasizes that the fundamental position of the G7 countries regarding Taiwan remains the same.

In a statement, the head of the Foreign Ministry of the "Big Seven" also called on North Korea to refrain from any further tests of nuclear weapons or ballistic missiles. They threatened a "quick, united and decisive international response" to the new missile tests of the DPRK.

The meeting of the heads of foreign policy departments of the "big seven" took place before the G7 summit in Hiroshima, which will be held in May.
