The USA begins transferring the money of the Russian oligarch Malofeev to Ukraine
12.05.2023The United States is beginning to transfer to Ukraine the confiscated assets of the Russian oligarch Konstantin Malofeev, the US Attorney General Merrick Garland announced on May 10 (in the US, this function is performed part-time by the Minister of Justice), writes radiosvoboda.org.

In February, Garland authorized the very possibility of such a transaction. Currently, it is a small amount (several million dollars), but, according to economists, the very precedent of such a transfer of funds is important.
Last year, the Ministry of Justice accused Russian oligarch Konstantin Malofeev of violating the sanctions announced against Russia for launching a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Malofeev provided funding for Russians promoting separatism in Crimea, the Voice of America notes.
This is the first transfer by the United States of confiscated Russian funds for the reconstruction of Ukraine, but it will not be the last, Garland stressed.
In April, the official said the Justice Department would be extremely strict in enforcing all sanctions against Russia and would aggressively pursue the assets of Russian oligarchs and other sanctioned individuals.
"We ... will go all the way in investigating, arresting and prosecuting those whose criminal actions allow Russia to continue its unjust war in Ukraine," Merrick Garland emphasized.
