The United States will assist Ukraine in the investigation of Russian war crimes

US Attorney General Merrick Garland on Monday announced the appointment of a prosecutor to the International Center for Investigation of Russian Aggression and a legal adviser to the embassy in Ukraine to assist the Ukrainian authorities. He announced this following negotiations with the Prosecutor General of Ukraine Andrey Kostiny, reports pravda.com.ua with reference to "European truth".

Garland recalled that in March, during a visit to Lviv, he announced joining the Joint Investigative Group (JIT), which is investigating Russia's war crimes in Ukraine.

"As we discussed today, to further strengthen this partnership, the Ministry of Justice (USA — ed.) will send an experienced prosecutor to the International Center for the Investigation of Crimes of Aggression against Ukraine," he announced.

According to the US Attorney General, the prosecutor will be physically located in The Hague at the European Union Agency for Cooperation in Criminal Justice (Eurojust) "and will have access to significant resources of the Ministry, which we have attracted in response to this crisis (the war in Ukraine — ed. )".

In addition, Garland announced the appointment of a permanent legal adviser to the US embassy in Ukraine, who will work with Ukrainian partners "on a number of complex issues in the sphere of justice."

As you know, with the support of Eurojust, a joint investigative group was created to collect evidence and investigate major international crimes committed in Ukraine. The Joint Investigative Group includes the International Criminal Court, Ukraine, as well as Lithuania, Poland, Estonia, Latvia, Slovakia, Romania and Estonia.

And by the beginning of the summer of 2023, the International Center for the Prosecution of the Crime of Aggression against Ukraine should start working in The Hague, which will unite prosecutors to prepare future cases for the prosecution of the crime of aggression against Ukraine.
