During a visit to Sweden, the European Commissioner stated that Europe is facing the largest arms buildup in the modern world, and said that countries like Sweden must take the lead.
“Sweden has a very strong defense industry and is carrying out large-scale rearmament, so it is a good example for other member states,” Kubilius argues.
He noted that currently the European defense industry is fragmented and suffers from the lack of a common market, which is why "European countries spend large amounts outside Europe."
"We have little time to build our defense capabilities. EU intelligence services predict that Russia could test NATO's Article 5 by 2030," the commissioner emphasized.
The European Commission has developed the Readiness 2030 program, which aims, among other things, to find long-term financing for the armament of member states.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen talked about raising 800 billion euros, including through changes to budgetary rules and providing 150 billion euros in loans.
The resources will be used both for rearmament and for supporting Ukraine.
