The Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Mark Rutte, was elected as the new Secretary General of NATO. It is reported RBC-Ukraine with reference to Reuters.

Mark Rutte

As the publication writes, on Wednesday, June 26, NATO allies elected the Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Mark Rutte, as the next Secretary General of NATO, "because the war in Ukraine is raging on the doorstep."

"Rutte's appointment is a formality after his only rival for the job, Romanian President Klaus Iohannis, announced last week that he had dropped out of the race after failing to gain traction," the article added.

Rutte's appointment

Back in November 2023, Politico wrote that Mark Rutte is considered the favorite for the position of the new head of NATO. At the same time, as the journalists wrote, his candidacy was opposed in the USA.

The reason given was the insufficient spending of funds by his government on the defense of the Alliance. The thesis that "the time has come for a woman to be the head of NATO" also "worked" not in Rutte's favor.

But already on June 25, the media reported that Rutte's appointment would be announced on June 26. Mark Rutte will replace Jens Stoltenberg in his position.
