"Polish cities have also gone through the path of revival from the ruins suffered as a result of the Second World War. We aim to learn as much as possible about their experiences and the main points that helped them quickly recover, rise and become the leading cities in Europe. In particular, Warsaw has such experience," said Mariupol Mayor Vadym Boychenko.
4 concepts of spatial development of the city are focused on the wishes of Mariupol residents themselves. In addition to creating a modern European city by the sea, they provide answers to the questions: what to do with "Azovstal", how to organize places of memory and get rid of the Soviet past.
One of the first companies that is already working together with the city municipality within the framework of "Mariupol Reborn" is the SCM investment group.
"We, a big business, are thinking about the revival of such a powerful city exclusively according to the principle of build back better. And this requires the involvement and experience of European cities recovering after the Second World War. And practices of modern architectural and urban projects. Already this year, with our support, 9 strategic initiatives will be started and partially completed, from the fast recovery plan to the Mariupol.Reborn Academy. And in addition, this year, the centers of expertise in EU cities will be operational," Natalya Yemchenko, director of communications of SCM, member of the project's supervisory board, is convinced.
Teams of well-known architects Viktor Zotov, Serhiy Rodionov and the urban bureaus Big City Lab and ROZKVIT worked on the projects. The final version, after evaluation by an international expert board and discussion, will include the best of each concept.
Polish cities will provide an analysis of regeneration concepts and approaches. These intentions were recorded in the Memorandum signed by Mayor Vadym Boychenko and the leadership of the Union of Polish Metropolies, which unites 12 largest Polish cities. Mariupol also signed a Declaration of Solidarity with its sister city, Gdańsk.
We will remind you that Mariupol Reborn is the largest city revival project in Europe since the Second World War.
Together with architects, urban planners and world-class experts, they are already working on the plan in order to quickly and efficiently start reconstruction after de-occupation.
