Germany will demand that the EU be "a little tougher" on Hungary
31.03.2025Germany's new government has agreed to pressure the European Union (EU) to get "a little tougher" on countries that "behave badly." This is likely to be Hungary. This is reported by RBC-Ukraine citing Politico.

Prime Minister of Hungary Viktor Orban
The conservatives of the new Chancellor Friedrich Merz and the Social Democratic Party (SPD) have agreed to demand that the EU suspend funding, as well as voting rights, for countries that violate key principles of the economic and political union, such as the rule of law.
Despite the fact that Hungary is not mentioned in the draft coalition agreement, Politico is convinced that it is Budapest that is being referred to - "the worst offender in the EU", which has been accused for years of:
- the destruction of democratic norms;
- curtailing freedom of the press;
- restrictions on the independence of judges.
“Existing safeguards, from infringement proceedings and withholding of EU funds to the suspension of membership rights, such as the right to vote in the EU Council, should be applied much more consistently than before,” wrote the negotiators in the draft coalition agreement on EU policy.
Hungary and the EU
In 2018, the EU launched the first phase of the Article 7 procedure, known as the “nuclear option,” against Hungary over suspected violations of the bloc’s core values and fundamental rights. The process later stalled due to political differences between member states.
In 2022, the European Commission blocked 22 billion euros from Hungary due to concerns about human rights and the independence of the judiciary.
In particular, another disagreement between the EU and Budapest arose due to the "friendly" relations between Prime Minister Viktor Orban and Moscow.
Meanwhile, EU member states are discussing the possibility of making decisions regarding Ukraine without Hungary's participation.
