Not only Crimea: the EU refused the US another issue regarding Ukraine

The agreement proposed by the US regarding Ukraine does not suit the EU on several important points. And it is not only the need to recognize the occupied Crimea as Russian. This is written about RBC-Ukraine with reference to Reuters.

Head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen

Last week, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that the US framework proposed to him by US Presidential Special Envoy Steve Witkoff in Paris was received with enthusiasm.

But, according to Reuters sources, among the US proposals was "recognition of Russia's illegal annexation of Crimea — a move that does not suit Europe and Ukraine."

"In addition to Crimea, other important sticking points remain, including Russia's demand to lift European Union sanctions against it before the negotiations are concluded, which Europe categorically opposes," the publication states.

Meeting on Ukraine in London

A key meeting of representatives of Ukraine, the UK, the US, France and Germany was to take place in London on April 23 to discuss ways to resolve the war. A full ceasefire was expected to be the key issue.

Ukraine was led in the negotiations by the Head of the Presidential Office Andriy Yermak, the Minister of Defense Rustem Umerov, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Andriy Sybiga, and the Deputy Head of the Presidential Office Pavlo Palisa.

Just 24 days before the summit, it became known that the US was planning to present its own peace initiative in London. It proposed, in particular, freezing the line of contact on the front, Ukraine's refusal to join NATO, and recognizing Crimea as Russian.

For his part, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine does not recognize any captured territories as part of the Russian Federation, thereby rejecting the US plan.

It is currently known that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will not participate in the meeting in London. At the same time, as RBC-Ukraine has learned, the Ukrainian delegation is heading to the meeting in the British capital.
