The International Basketball Federation did not allow the Russian national team to participate in qualifying competitions for the 2024 Olympic Games. This is stated in the statement of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA). hromadske.ua.

The Executive Committee approved the list of 28 teams that will participate in FIBA preliminary qualifying tournaments. Among them, 16 are national teams that did not pass the second round of qualification for the 2023 Basketball World Cup. The rest of the participants are the teams with the highest FIBA rating that did not advance to the second round of World Cup 2023 qualification.

16 national teams from Europe will take part in the preliminary qualification, including the Ukrainian team. Russia's place in the list was taken by the Bulgarian national team.

FIBA noted that they did not allow the Russian Federation to qualify due to the recommendations of the IOC regarding the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes in the competition.

The FIBA Preliminary Olympic Qualifying Tournaments will be held from August 12 to 20, 2023, and the five winners will earn spots in the FIBA Qualifying Competitions for the 2024 Olympics.

The president of the International Ice Hockey Federation announced on April 16 that teams from Russia and Belarus will be banned from participating in competitions while the war against Ukraine continues.

As a reminder, the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Ukraine has officially banned Ukrainian athletes from participating in competitions where there will be representatives from Russia or Belarus. This applies to Olympic, non-Olympic and Paralympic sports.
