According to media reports from sources in Berlin and Brussels, Merz's possible visit to Ukraine in early May is in the preparation stage.
The visit is to be timed to coincide with the "Coalition of the Determined" summit on May 9 in Kyiv, Welt reports. French President Emmanuel Macron and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk are also expected to arrive there.
In that case, it would be Merz's first foreign visit as German Chancellor, Welt reports. However, his spokesman declined to comment on the media reports.
It should be noted that Merz already visited Ukraine in December 2024 — then he was in the status of leader of the German opposition — and met with President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Earlier, the future Chancellor of Germany announced his readiness to transfer long-range Taurus missiles to Ukraine, subject to agreement with European partners.
