Massive drone and missile attack on Kyiv: destruction, casualties, air defense work and the new reality of war

On the night of July 3-4, Kyiv and a number of other cities in Ukraine experienced the most massive attack since the start of the full-scale war. Explosions shattered the silence of the capital for hours, the sky was lit up with flashes from air defense, and the streets were covered with debris from drones and missiles. People descended en masse into the metro, underground parking lots, and basements, trying to escape the deadly debris. This night became a test for every Kyiv resident and a symbol of a new escalation of the war, where the enemy's main target remains civilians and critical infrastructure (UNIAN, Public, BBC).

Chronology of the attack: how the night siege unfolded

The attack began at around 20:00 p.m. on July 3 and lasted until almost dawn. Russia used a combined strike: more than 539 Shahed attack drones, 11 missiles of various types, including the hypersonic Kinzhal. The main blow fell on Kyiv, but other cities in Ukraine were also hit. The airstrikes continued for more than seven hours, and residents of the capital were forced to spend the night in shelters (24 Channel, Lviv portal).

According to the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the enemy tried to break through the echeloned defense, launching drones in waves from different directions. The main vector of UAV movement was again directed towards the Kyiv region and the capital. Air defense worked continuously, and the military used not only anti-aircraft systems, but also interceptor drones to destroy enemy targets (Lviv portal).

Casualties and destruction: strikes on residential areas and infrastructure

At least one person was killed and 26 others were injured in a massive attack in Kyiv, including a 10-year-old girl with a leg injury. 14 people were hospitalized, the rest received assistance on the spot. Dozens of residential buildings, cars, medical facilities, schools, energy facilities, and railway infrastructure were damaged. Large-scale destruction was recorded in six districts of the capital, with Solomianskyi district suffering the most, where drone debris caused fires in high-rise buildings and warehouses (Facts, DW).

Rescuers of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine extinguished more than 30 fires, evacuated residents from destroyed buildings, and unblocked the bodies of the deceased from under the rubble. In total, more than 1280 tons of construction debris were removed. The city recorded power and water outages, public transport delays, and the streets were littered with debris from downed drones and missiles (Lviv portal).

Air defense and interceptor drones: how Kyiv defended itself from a record attack

The Ukrainian air defense system demonstrated high efficiency: 268 drones were destroyed, another 208 were suppressed by electronic warfare, and two missiles were shot down. For the first time, interceptor drones were used on a large scale to repel the attack, which showed their effectiveness in urban conditions. President Volodymyr Zelensky stressed that Kyiv became the main target, and the work of the air defense saved hundreds of lives (Lviv portal, BBC).

At the same time, the attack revealed new challenges: some drones broke through echeloned defenses, using complex flight paths, low altitudes, and even mobile networks for control. Experts note that the Russians are improving their tactics, using artificial intelligence and new schemes for circumventing electronic warfare (EW) means.UNIAN).

Impact Adjustment: The Role of Agents and Modern Technologies

The Security Service of Ukraine has detained an FSB agent who was coordinating strikes on Kyiv. The 17-year-old graduate of a metropolitan school, recruited through Telegram channels, received coordinates of potential targets from the curators, recorded their technical condition and transmitted information to the enemy. Among the objects of interest to the Russians were energy facilities, headquarters of the Defense Forces, and air defense systems. The agent was detained near one of the military departments of the Armed Forces of Ukraine with a phone on which he took photos of the identified targets (Novinarnya).

This case confirms that the enemy is actively using an agent network to adjust strikes, as well as modern technologies for real-time data transmission. Identifying and neutralizing such groups is becoming one of the main tasks for Ukrainian special services.

International reaction: condemnation, support and new challenges

The massive attack on Kyiv has caused a strong resonance in the world. The EU countries, the USA, the UN and international humanitarian organizations condemned Russia's actions, calling them another war crime. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called on Western partners to accelerate the supply of air defense systems, Patriot missiles and other critically important weapons. Diplomats emphasize: attacks on civilians and infrastructure must receive a tough response from the civilized world (LRT, TSN).

Psychological effect: panic, cohesion and new resilience of Kyiv residents

For many Kyiv residents, this night was the most terrible during the entire war. People spent the night in the subway, basements, helped each other, cleared rubble, and provided first aid to the injured. Psychologists from the State Emergency Service worked with the victims of the shelling, providing support to 39 people. Despite fatigue, fear, and loss, Kyiv residents demonstrated solidarity and willingness to help their neighbors, which became a symbol of the city's invincibility (Facts).

Analysis of enemy tactics: new attack patterns and future threats

Military experts note that Russia is improving the tactics of combined strikes: drones are launched in waves from different directions, used simultaneously with missiles to overload air defenses. Some drones simulate an attack to distract attention, and the main blow is delivered to critical objects. The use of artificial intelligence, autonomous control systems and mobile repeaters makes attacks even more dangerous (Фокус, BBC).

Western aid: prospects and challenges in 2025

Against the backdrop of a new wave of attacks, the issue of Western aid is becoming even more urgent. The US, EU and other partners have announced new packages of military and financial support, including the supply of air defense systems, interceptor drones, artillery and ammunition. However, experts warn that in 2025 the volume of aid may decrease due to political changes in the US and Europe, and Ukraine should prepare to increase its own production of weapons and defense technologies (Correspondent).

Conclusions: the new reality of war and lessons for the future

The massive attack on Kyiv and a number of other cities has become another reminder: the war continues, and the enemy will not stop at any means. Ukraine must strengthen its air defense, develop its own technologies, strengthen counterintelligence, and work on social cohesion. This is a signal to the world: the impunity of the aggressor gives rise to new crimes, and only a joint response can stop the escalation.
