The Lithuanian Defense Ministry noted that the strategic agreement reached during the meeting in Kyiv between the heads of state of Lithuania and Ukraine, Gitanas Nauseda and Volodymyr Zelensky, on the development of the Ukrainian defense industry in Lithuania is "moving forward."
Preliminary agreements have now been reached between the countries on "the production of strategic weapons systems in Lithuania in cooperation with Ukraine."
This was agreed at a meeting between the Minister of National Defense of Lithuania Dovilė Šakalienė, Senior Advisor to the President of Ukraine on Strategic Issues Oleksandr Kamyshin, and the Minister of Strategic Industry of Ukraine Herman Smetanin.
The Lithuanian Ministry of Defense noted that the Ukrainian defense industry has "incredible potential" to become a world-class player due to the high level of experience, including combat, motivation and competence of engineers, as well as "the future-oriented thinking of key decision-makers in the industry."
"Lithuania will continue to invest in the Ukrainian defense industry, purchasing from Ukraine for Ukraine. 20 million euros have already been allocated for this, the amount will continue to grow. However, we strive for even closer cooperation - the development of joint Lithuanian-Ukrainian weapons production both in Lithuania and in Ukraine," said Sakaliene.
The Lithuanian agency also did not disclose the specific types of weapons covered by the agreement "for security reasons."
The country's Ministry of Defense added that joint meetings of representatives of both states will be held in Lithuania in the near future, at which the details of the implementation of the agreement will be discussed.
As a reminder, in mid-January, Lithuanian Defense Minister Dovile Šakaliene stated that Ukraine would receive thousands of drones from Lithuania worth 5 million euros.
We also wrote that in February, Lithuanian President Nauseda called for providing Ukraine with modern weapons and long-range strike capabilities.
