The helicopter is intended for Special Transit Scheme trains and rapid response to potential incidents. According to Kondratovičius, changes in the security situation in the region have led to the emergence of new threats and challenges.

"This helicopter will be used to strengthen control over trains heading to and from the Kaliningrad region. Border guards do not lose vigilance and reliably guard the state border, so one of our priorities at the moment is maximum care for the material support of the border service and officers, as well as the necessary means," he said.

Earlier, the European Commission allocated 25 million euros to ensure the security of the Special Transit Scheme. The helicopter cost 11 million euros, and two more H145 helicopters with special equipment were also purchased, which will specifically monitor trains from Russia.

It is noted that the new helicopters are equipped with video surveillance systems, cargo-lifting equipment, search and rescue equipment, fire-fighting equipment, and medical aid.

In addition to escorting Russian trains, they will be involved in the event of emergencies or accidents at the Ostrovets NPP, for searching for people and medical transportation.

The special transit regime is intended to ensure the land transit of persons between the Kaliningrad Oblast and other territories of Russia. Russian citizens are issued a simplified transit document for multiple transit, but they must cross the territory of Lithuania within 24 hours.
