They agreed to use their own capabilities to "undermine Russia's control of supply chains," but in a way that would not harm the stable supply of nuclear fuel.
The strategic partnership is aimed at increasing commercial alternatives in the nuclear fuel market for third countries that are currently dependent on Rosatom nuclear fuel.
"The agreement will be the basis for completely pushing Putin out of the nuclear fuel market, and to do it as quickly as possible, in order to deprive him of another source of funding for his barbaric attack on Ukraine," the statement on the website of the British government reads.
British Minister of Energy Security and Carbon Neutrality Grant Shepps emphasized the importance of creating an alliance to solve the problem of dependence on Russian nuclear fuel, because "the world is increasingly turning to nuclear energy as a source of low-carbon and safe energy."
"Joining efforts with other countries should show Putin that Russia is no longer welcome, as well as strengthen global energy security through a reliable international supply of nuclear fuel from reliable sources," said the British minister.
Ukrainian Energoatom, in partnership with the American company Westinghouse, plans to start manufacturing its own nuclear fuel for Soviet-type reactors in 2026.
At the beginning of 2023, Britain announced the opening of a nuclear fuel fund that will reduce dependence on Russian uranium.
