Canada expanded sanctions against Russian airlines

The Canadian government has expanded the list of Russian organizations subject to sanctions. The Volga-Dnepr group of companies, including its subsidiaries, came under restrictions. The group's cargo airlines operate Soviet and Western-made aircraft, сообщает TRAVEL RBC-Ukraine with a link to ch-aviation.com.

It is noted that the Volga-Dnepr group includes three airlines, two of which were previously sanctioned by other countries because of Western-made aircraft:

"Volga-Dnepr" — operates Soviet-made An-124 and Il-76 cargo planes, specializing in the transportation of super-heavy cargo;
AirBridgeCargo — operates Western-made cargo planes: Boeing 747 and one Boeing 777;
Atran — with a fleet of seven Boeing 737s.

Currently, only the Volga-Dnepr airline operates, and two other carriers operating Western-made cargo planes are inactive due to sanctions.

The Volga-Dnepr group of companies and its subsidiary airlines are not included in the special lists of the USA or the European Union, but fall under the general sanctions imposed on the Russian aviation sector. This means that any transactions with Western companies are prohibited.

One of the An-124-100 aircraft of the Volga-Dnepr airline was detained at the Toronto airport in the first days of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. By the end of 2022, the Russian carrier spent more than 223 thousand US dollars for aircraft parking.

The Ural Civil Aviation Plant came under Canadian sanctions. It is also included in the list of the Office for the Control of Foreign Assets of the USA and the EU. The enterprise is part of the Rostec industrial holding and is actively engaged in military aviation.
