Italy plans to become a hub for the supply of Algerian gas to Europe

Italy plans to get rid of dependence on Russian gas within 2023 and turn into a gas hub for Europe. About this сообщает RBC-Ukraine with reference to the Italian publication Il Messaggero.

As the publication notes, this was stated in an interview by the Minister of Economic Development of Italy, Adolfo Urso.

"During this year, we will free ourselves from Russia compared to the 40% that we bought from Moscow in 2021, and the 16% that we fixed last year. From next year, we will also be able to supply gas to other countries, and in a short time we will become a European gas hub, including thanks to the capacity increase of the Azerbaijani Trans-Adriatic gas pipeline. But there are other industrial opportunities from Baku, as evidenced by the contracts of Ansaldo Energia, as well as renewable energy and electricity projects," the minister emphasized while leaving for Baku.

In addition, he added that thanks to the two regasification plants in Pembino and Ravenna, which will start working by the summer, we will be completely free from Russia: they will produce 10 billion cubic meters of gas, exactly as much as was imported from Moscow last year. Urso noted.

According to him, already next year Italy will be able to supply gas to other countries and will soon become a European gas hub.

"We must do the same on the electricity front: we can become the electrical hub of the Mediterranean, and with the Enel megafactory in Catania, the largest producer of solar panels in Europe. The future of the country is connected with investments in "green" and digital technologies: from batteries to semiconductors, as well as turbines, accumulators and panels," the minister added.

In addition, Urso emphasized that now industrial fuel prices in Italy are lower than in Spain, France and Germany.

"This has never happened before. We will achieve the organic reform that operators and consumers deserve, and all economical families and enterprises will be rewarded, but to achieve this goal, the contribution of all ministries is required. This is synergistic work with other administrations. Now we have counted almost 2 thousand different promoted: 229 national and 1753 regional. We will discuss with the regions the creation of a single concept of incentives in accordance with the principles of efficiency and effectiveness, greater uniformity and simplicity. This is how industrial policy is formed," the minister stated.

Recently, RBC-Ukraine reported that against the backdrop of Europe's rejection of Russian energy supplies, Italy concluded a gas contract with Libya worth $8 billion during a visit to Tripoli.

In addition, we wrote that Italy signed agreements with several countries on the expansion of alternative energy sources after Moscow's invasion of Ukraine, and Algeria replaced Russia as the largest supplier of gas to Italy.

We will add that the head of the Ministry of Defense of Italy, Guido Crosetto, stated that the only way to avoid the Third World War is to stop Russian aggression.
