Italy and Libya signed a gas contract for $8 billion
30.01.2023During his visit to Libya, Prime Minister of Italy Giorgia Melona announced the conclusion of a contract for the supply of natural gas from this North African country. Italy and Libya jointly invest 8 billion dollars in gas supplies, the development of the gas extraction industry in Libya, as well as in the development of ecologically clean energy, writes svoboda.org.

The agreement was signed by the heads of the monopolistic state gas companies — the Italian ENI and the Libyan National Oil Corporation. This is the largest investment in Libya's energy sector in the last two decades.
Before her visit to Libya, George Melona visited Algeria, which is now the main supplier of gas to Italy. There, the Italian gas company ENI and the Algerian Sonatrach signed a new agreement on energy security and combating greenhouse gas emissions.
- After the start of Russia's military invasion of Ukraine and the introduction of economic sanctions against Russia by the European Union, EU countries are actively switching to purchasing energy carriers from other suppliers. Their goal is to get rid of dependence on Russian supplies of gas, oil and petroleum products in the shortest possible time. In mid-January, Germany — previously the main European consumer of Russian energy — announced that it had completely switched to supplies from other sources.
