The border service of Moldova refuted Minnikhanov's words that he is persona non grata for Chisinau. According to the department, the persons who were banned from entering the country on Monday "presented contradictory information about the purpose of the visit," RBC quotes. It was also stated that "supporting a candidate in local elections in our country is not a valid reason [for entering the country], and the authorities ask Russian officials to refrain from interfering in the internal affairs of our country."
Ivan Egorov, the head of the Ak-Bars holding, flew to the congress together with Minnykhanov. Ego was also not allowed across the border.
Mynnykhanov flew to Moldova at the invitation of Viktor Petrov, the candidate for the head of the autonomous region of the Gagauzia region, and Alexander Sukhodolsky, the vice-chairman of the regional parliament, who recently visited Tatarstan.
The newspaper "Kommersant" indicates that politicians and public figures of Gagauzia, where the congress is held in the city of Komrat, have repeatedly criticized the Moldovan government. Also, many of them support Russia's actions on the territory of Ukraine.
