Merkel's ex-advisor called Nord Stream 2 the biggest mistake of her government

The long-time adviser on foreign affairs of the former Chancellor of Germany, Angela Merkel, now the chairman of the Munich Security Conference, Christoph Heusgen, called the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline for the transportation of Russian gas the biggest mistake of the German government in recent years. About it, as reported epravda.com.ua, Heusgen said in an interview with Welt am Sonntag.

"In 2015, the federal government decided in favor of the German-Russian pipeline project, because after the Fukushima reactor accident in Japan, Germany wanted to abandon nuclear energy, and Russian gas was the fastest and cheapest solution," he explained.

Heusgen now admits that then German politicians underestimated the situation, recalling, among other things, the mocking reaction to the warning in 2018 by then US President Donald Trump that Germany was threatened with gas dependence on Russia.

Ex-advisor Merkel also believes that Germany has a "moral obligation" to support Ukraine, especially because Putin is counting on "a reduction in economic and military support for Ukraine from the United States and Europe." He supports the supply of German Leopard battle tanks to Ukraine.

Just a few days before Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Germany canceled the certification of Nord Stream 2, and the German authorities have repeatedly emphasized that they will not resume the operation of the pipeline.

Angela Merkel herself stated in June that she did not consider her decision to allow the construction of Nord Stream 2 to be a mistake and that it put Ukraine in a more vulnerable position vis-à-vis Russia. Later, she stated that her government's rejection of the Russian gas pipeline project together with the Minsk agreements could lead to an undesirable deterioration of relations with Russia.
