Downing Street said that the visit to London of the European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy for talks with British officials comes amid intensified joint efforts to contain the Russian economy.

"UK and EU foreign policy consultations will focus on joint support for Ukraine, countering Russian hybrid threats and working to increase collective defence spending," the British government said in a statement.

It is also indicated that as part of Britain's commitments to strengthen ties with Europe and work together to secure the future of the region, Kallas will arrive in London today, March 18, to discuss with the heads of the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs "ways to increase pressure on Russia and establish a just and lasting peace in Ukraine."

The talks will coordinate cooperation on Ukraine, and will also discuss efforts to increase economic pressure on the aggressor country and ensure that Russia pays for the damage caused to Ukraine by the war.

In addition, issues will be raised regarding strengthening actions against hybrid threats, such as cyberattacks, election interference, and "unrestrained Russian disinformation."

The parties will review efforts to increase European defense spending, including through "innovative initiatives," and strengthen broader military preparedness in support of NATO.

As British Foreign Secretary David Lammy emphasized, ensuring the country's strength and security "cannot be achieved without strengthening our common European security and uniting with our partners to secure a just and lasting peace in Ukraine."

Downing Street also said that Kallas will meet with the Chief of Defense Staff for a briefing with the INTERFLEX commander and EU liaison officers for the Military Assistance Mission in Support of Ukraine.

“The discussion will focus on how to build on the success of Operation INTERFLEX by improving the training offered to Ukraine,” the British government said.

British Defense Minister John Healy noted that "European security begins in Ukraine."

“The UK and the EU are united in their determination to support Ukraine with the military firepower needed to confront Russia’s illegal invasion and secure a lasting peace,” he said.

European sanctions against Russia and aid to Ukraine

Official London recalled that Britain and the European Union, along with other international partners, have already jointly imposed sanctions against Russia, depriving its economy of $450 billion since February 2022.

Yesterday, British Foreign Secretary David Lemmy said that the G7 countries are preparing further steps to put pressure on Russia, which they could take if Russian dictator Vladimir Putin does not agree to a ceasefire in Ukraine.

Britain and other Western nations have also worked together to train Ukrainian military personnel under the British Operation INTERFLEX and the EU Military Advisory Mission in Ukraine, which have jointly trained over 120 Ukrainian soldiers.

We should add that yesterday, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaia Kallas, stated that the EU's allocation of new aid of 40 billion euros to Ukraine has broad political support, but many details remain. She also noted that Hungary's position has also been taken into account.
