Drone attack on Moscow: explosions in Khimki and fire in the Elma technopark

On the night of May 17, the Russian capital was again under the sights of drones, and local residents woke up to the roar of explosions and the work of air defense.

Residents of Moscow and nearby towns described the night as one of the loudest in months. A series of powerful explosions rocked the Khimki, Lobnya and Naro-Fominsk districts. Official sources confirmed that Russian air defenses had shot down another wave of drones heading towards the capital region.¹

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said that in the past 24 hours, air defense forces have shot down the 114th drone heading towards the capital.¹ According to preliminary data, no injuries were reported. At the same time, traffic restrictions and increased patrols were observed in several areas of the city and region.

Airport restrictions

Due to the threat from the air, Vnukovo, Domodedovo, Ramenskoye and Sheremetyevo airports temporarily suspended operations. Airlines redirected flights to alternate sites or delayed departures for several hours. Passengers reported long lines and a lack of accurate information from controllers.³

The events in Moscow have attracted the attention of foreign media. Analysts from London and Washington note that such attacks are becoming more regular and indicate improvements in the tactics of unmanned systems.⁴ Experts emphasize that the destruction of the Elma technology park could affect the production of components for Russian industry.⁵

At the same time, there have been no official comments from Kyiv or other Ukrainian cities regarding involvement in the incident. International observers are calling for restraint and avoidance of escalation.

Technical details and implications

According to experts, the drones that participated in the attack had an improved navigation system and the ability to bypass electronic warfare. The fire in the Elma technopark lasted for more than four hours before it was contained. Several workshops where optical equipment and devices were manufactured were damaged at the enterprise.²

The economic impact on the region is still being assessed. Experts predict a possible increase in prices for electronic components due to production disruptions. Local residents have been advised to stay in shelters and monitor official announcements.
